Spectral Average

What is this? Inspired by Jim Campbell's Illuminated Averages, this tool computes the spectral average of an entire piece of music. Every short window of the audio is analyzed via FFT, and those thousands of spectra are averaged into one. The result is a single composite tone — a sonic portrait of the piece's timbre, density, and frequency makeup.

Melody, rhythm, and form vanish. What remains is the statistical residue: the average vowel color of a voice, the persistent buzz of an instrument, the overall harmonic fingerprint.

Peak Enhance suppresses broad noisy spectral regions (like percussion) and boosts narrow harmonic peaks, revealing pitched content that might otherwise be masked by drum transients.
